January 12, 2011: Public Schools in Crisis - Why We Can't Afford Our Public Schools - The grim economic reality is that public schools as we know them, can't survive the next few years. It's simple arithmetic - school revenues are flat or falling while expenses are rising dramatically. Many of the costs are beyond control, unless the rules are changed in Harrisburg.
Negotiated salary increases, higher healthcare costs, rising utility rates, and most im- portantly - mandated pensions that far exceed those in the private sector, must be paid. But there is no money, and no one will be coming to the rescue with new taxes or State funding.
Educators will be furloughed, programs dropped, and schools closed. No one will escape the pain: taxpayers, teachers, students, unions and legislators. This forum examined what can be done to minimize the pain, and how innovative thinking might help.
